The Minor in Acute Care, in the form of a curricular unit, aims to offer academic training to students from the institution itself in an optional format, to ERASMUS + students and to external student candidates (national and international), in the area of ​​acute care.

This curricular unit was designed in two complementary parts (I – 10 ECTS and II – 10 ECTS), which can be attended separately or together, depending on the student's choice.

Recipients

  • Erasmus+ Mobility Candidates;
  • Candidates enrolled in other national or foreign institutions (other than through ERASMUS+ mobility) and already graduated candidates who hold the professional title of physiotherapist;
  • Candidates enrolled in the 4th year of the Physiotherapy degree course at ESSAlcoitão – Can only enroll in 10 ECTS (MINOR I or II).

Until December 30. After this date and if there are remaining vacancies, applications may be accepted as long as they meet the prerequisites. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Minor I

  1. Demonstrate the physiotherapy process in an acute care context with different clinical conditions and ages, independently;
  2. Communicate and discuss, independently, strategies to ensure patient and family participation in the care plan during all phases of the physiotherapy process, within a client-centered approach;
  3. Communicate independently, in accordance with practical guidelines, the results of physiotherapeutic interventions with colleagues, doctors and multidisciplinary teams;
  4. Independently document the physical therapy process based on WCPT guidelines for the patient's medical record;
  5. Reflect, independently, on the professional skills required in clinical practice within the professional framework, ethical issues and multidisciplinary work.

Evidence-Informed Practice to Support Clinical and Ethical Decision-Making in Acute Care Settings:

  • Principles of Evidence-Informed Practice;
  • Evidence Implementation Cycle;
  • Evidence Assessment;
  • Evidence in practice.

Intervention in specific conditions:

  • Neuromuscular;
  • Cardiorespiratory;
  • Musculoskeletal.

Intervention in specific conditions:

  • Integumentary (burned);
  • Multisystemic;
  • Post-surgery.

Implementation of the Physiotherapy Process in Acute Care:

  • Examination and Assessment;
  • Diagnosis/problem list;
  • Goals;
  • Intervention Plan.

For the student to be successful, they must create a Portfolio (100%) containing:

  • Activity 1 – Carry out 6 consolidation activities proposed by teachers. (75% of the final grade);
  • Activity 2 – Clinical Activity Report (25% of the final grade).

Minor II

  1. Be able to demonstrate the physiotherapy process in an acute care context with different clinical conditions and ages, independently, using a real case study.
  2. Communicate and discuss, independently, strategies to ensure patient and family participation in the care plan during all phases of the physiotherapy process, within a client-centered approach;
  3. Communicate independently, in accordance with practical guidelines, the results of physiotherapeutic interventions with colleagues, doctors and multidisciplinary teams;
  4. Independently document the physical therapy process based on WCPT guidelines for the patient's medical record;
  5. Reflect, independently, on the professional skills required in clinical practice within the professional framework, ethical issues and multidisciplinary work.

  • Planning and support of mobility and activity in acute care;
  • Promotion of family participation and inclusion.

  • Intervention Plan;Case Study Structure and Design.
